OUTREACH ~ PARKWOODS UNITED CHURCH

Parkwoods people care about each other and about those beyond our church walls, contributing time, energy and financial gifts to our many outreach programmes. We strive to help those in need in and around our community wherever possible.

Brookbanks African Grannies

Brookbanks for African Grannies is a group of women in the community working to raise awareness and funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation in support of the Grandmothers in Africa who are raising their orphaned grandchildren because the parents have died of AIDS.

This group of dedicated women began working together in 2006 and have had numerous events to accomplish their goal. One major event of the past was a dinner held to celebrate the life of Ann Davies, a tireless worker for the needy, both here and abroad. Another was an elegant English tea held in a private home. As well as the group fundraisers, many individuals have carried out activities independently.  The grand total for all the fundraising activities is well over $15,000.00.

When the Stephen Lewis Foundation announced the Stride to Turn the Tide National Walk in 2010, the Brookbanks Grannies embraced this fundraiser with enthusiasm. They walked the 10k route, as did all groups across Canada, wearing their African scarves and raising the awareness of the plight of the Grandmothers in Africa.

The main fundraiser for 2011 will be an English Afternoon Tea to be held at the Donway Covenant United Church on June 4 from 2 to 4.  Tickets can be purchased from any members of the Brookbanks Grannies.

Names of members and any further information can be obtained by telephoning Parkwoods United Church where the work of the community group, Brookbanks for African Grannies, is well known and celebrated.
